Labor & delivery

As I sit here during my "treatment" for the after effects of a vaginal delivery, I thought I'd recap the last couple of days. For those of you who are wondering what the after effects and/or treatment are, I assure you, you don't want to know.

Started contractions Sunday around 5am. By about 4pm, they were 5 min apart consistently for 90min so we decided to head on in. On a side note, I am so thankful for my husband and his nesting instincts as he cleaned the house, blew all the crazy leaves, washed the car and overall got us ready all during that day, to be in survival mode for a couple of weeks.

Unfortunately, when we got to triage, despite the frequent contractions and worsening intensity, the Dr didn't feel I was progressing fast enough to admit me and sent us home. I'll be honest I was pretty annoyed. Anyway, over the next two hrs at home my contractions quickly became every 2 min and were incredibly intense. Luckily, when we went back to the hosp I was admitted.

I had no expectations about labor as I knew I had no idea what it would be like, but wanted to go in with an open mind about a natural birth. Unfortunately, when I was having incredibly intense contractions every 2 min with each contractions lasting over a minute and my husband later describing me as incoherent during them, I decided the cost was outweighing the benefit and we got an epidural. I'm sure that aided in the fact that my labor continued overnight and I didn't start pushing until 10 the next morning, but all in all it was the right thing to do. Luckily it wore off before the pushing and I only pushed for 30min and I was walking comfortably almost immediately.

As expected he was incredibly alert for the first hour and already started nursing like a champ.  I have since realized that he is a very oral baby and half of the ease of nursing has been just putting something in his mouth.  Since then he has continued to nurse well and I am so thankful.  Overall he has been very easy.  Our only hiccup has been finding a place for him to sleep.  Of course in the ideal world he would sleep in his safe bassinet, but he prefers our arms or the car seat.  So we're trying to balance that at this point.

He had his first pediatric appointment yesterday and continues to be healthy.

Pate and I are so very lucky to have such a healthy, happy, beautiful baby.  We're so very excited to see whats going to in store for us in the future!
